Why learn more opening systems than the ones we are playing?
The more you know about openings, the more your chess will improve. Every single opening system has different setups, typical pawn structures, plans, ideas and specific tactical resources. Understanding more opening systems and their subsequent middlegame positions will broaden your chess knowledge and will
improve your play in general.
Let's take an example of how a computer 'thinks'. The computer tries all the possibilities and compares each option giving them a score. A Human player, through experience (if he/she recognizes
any given position), will know the best plan and resources for that position and take only a few possibilities into consideration. This way, the human will nearly always continue to survive against the power of Gigahertz. Conclusion: extend your knowledge and you will improve.
In addition, you will be able confidently start playing new opening systems, fully prepared for middlegame stages
too. Every player should change their opening systems from time to time or add new openings in their
repertoire. Otherwise, progress will soon end.
