annotated chess game for advanced - page 725.Qb4If 25.Ba3 (defending "c1") would have followed 25.Be6 threatening 26.Rc3 or 26.Bh3 and 27.Qxf3+, with mate.
25.Qe3! The game ends with a small combination. Black threats mate on f2 and the Bishop from d3. 26.Qxd4 Forced. If 26.Bxd4 then 26.Rc1 and mate. 26.Rc1+ Here comes the combination theme, called "overloading". The overwhelmed piece is the Bishop from b2, which has to protect both the queen on d4 and the field c1. It's the most common theme of combinations, and it is met very often in tournaments. After losing the queen, White has resigned soon. FINAL THOUGHTS The game began with a variation of English Defense, which I didn't know very well, but after a few moves, I turned the game towards Grünfeld Defense. Against 1.d4, I play Nimzovich Defense, but at the same time, I know the plans from several opening systems. It results how important is for you to study other opening systems too. You can make analogies and what grandmasters have once discovered, you know already. It is a great advantage! White had an obvious, but wrong plan: he tried to capture a border pawn. Being underdeveloped, he wasn't actually able to capture it. The moves he wasted for that wrong plan led to this underdevelopment, which was exploited by Black by practicing an active play. It wasn't so obvious that White was in big trouble, but, due to some "strong" moves, the Black's advantage has gradually risen. Having all the pieces developed, he played active in the center, which led to its opening. White couldn't manage to castle. He had to protect his central pawns with less pieces, because he was underdeveloped. The next critical position was that in which White managed to put his king under protection, but the connection between the rooks wasn't established and the other pieces had not enough space. With some "still" moves, Black improved the position of his pieces. Under a great psychical pressure, caused by a hopeless position, White made a mistake, which allowed the final combination. Black's strategy was to play active the whole game. The game ended with a tactical combination. I hope you enjoyed it, and, what is more important, that you learned. Find more annotated games in our
